3 Reasons Why You’re Hardwired to Learn the Hard Way

Talk to anyone who is at least 10 years older and you’ll get an earful of advice.

Fear runs our lives. Face that fear head on and don’t just settle for third place or second 🙂 Where have we heard that before?

Will you heed the warnings of your elders and make changes to your life?

Probably not.

But don’t worry; you’re not any more pig-headed than the rest of us.

We all tend to think we’re invincible until, well, life happens.

We’re flying high when something sucker punches us in the gut.

It could be layoffs, burn out from our job or the loss of a loved one, but you find yourself wishing you were better prepared.

We wish we had kept our resumes current, had more money and exercised more. We wish we had said the things we wanted to say and spent more time with the ones we love.

But it’s too late.

If only we had listened to that sage advice. But the truth is, we’re not hardwired to learn that way.

Here are three reasons “we need to learn the hard way” and how to change it….

We learn best from experience

According to Benjamin Bloom’s “Taxonomy of Learning” theory, there are three domains of learning: thinking, feeling and doing. And guess what? Of course, they are all related to memory, but they also involve tying emotions to those memories. When someone gives us advice, the experience usually isn’t emotional. We listen, maybe even try to remember, but unless it evokes a strong feeling, it’ll always just be advice instead of a lesson learned.

Change your environment! “Your a product of your environment”

It’s how we were raised

How did you learn what “hot” and “cold” meant? If you never felt either sensation, you would still be confused. Someone could try to explain how it felt, but it just wouldn’t work. Even the words used to describe hot and cold would be off limits. If you don’t know cold, you certainly couldn’t understand levels of cold, like blistering, freezing or chilly. 10 Ways To Change Your Life Today

We think we’re far from it

Most of us are pretty grounded. We know that nothing lasts forever and our lives will eventually change. We just think it’s going to happen sometime in the distant future. So, why worry about it now?

Of course, it’s easy to beat yourself up for turning your nose up at the easy way of learning, but that’s not really fair.

Certainly, you could have saved yourself some heartache by heeding the warnings of your elders, but then you would never really learn.

Still, there are some lessons that are better left to the imagination.

If someone advises you to hug your mom more often and tell her that you love her, just do it.

Life is too short to exist. Step out of your comfort zone and be daring to make one change today.
